Five Fall Refreshers

By Sklar Furnishings

Design Inspiration, Tips & Trends

September 23, 2020

If your home is feeling dull and wilted after the long summer, then you’ll love what we’ve got in store for you. We’re highlighting small changes that can make a big difference in your home, helping you refresh your space so you can fall back in love with it.

Decor can be enhanced by rugs, accessories, and artwork. These have huge potential for changing the energy of a space without swapping furniture or redoing the walls and fixtures. Simple changes and small touches can really bring a space together.

Refreshingly Different

Our first offering is the Nourison Prismatic Seaglass Rug. Sure, it’s slightly larger than what is normally termed a ‘small touch’ but it’s a great way to breathe life and into a space that’s gone stale. With a colorful but neutral color palette, this rug is exciting without becoming overbearing, capable of blending in with existing furnishings. A remarkably comfortable wool/Luxcelle blend provides durability and a lovely texture.

Refreshing decor pieces don’t always have to be big or even entirely functional. Glass Studio Borowski’s artful Chameleon Bowl is one such example. Creating a whimsical atmosphere, this colorful and bold decorative bowl provides plenty of charm and is sure to spark a conversation or a smile as it brightens the mood of your space.

Speaking of visual and artistic elements, we can’t omit this wonderful piece of Steve Snider Artwork. This lovely piece is a photographic print of a wall of hearts by the artist, an exciting piece that’s bold, colorful, and—dare we say it—heartwarming. Visual art always makes a splash and can really change the vibe of a room.

We recently got new Nourison Throw Pillows and they’re all wonderfully bold, fun, irreverent, and playful. These pillows feature a variety of playful, cool designs that catch the eye and tempt a smile. Throw pillows are a great way to change the mood in the living room, and it’s easy to throw a few on a couch or chair.

If you’re not botanically-inclined or don’t want to keep replacing living flowers, silk flowers are a great alternative. Some Orchid, Tree, or Tropical Purple silk and polymer plants are great for building a slightly more green and organic atmosphere without dealing with the mess of dead leaves and dropped pollen.

Changing Spaces

Getting a new impression out of an old space can be as easy as a couple of careful decor changes. Rearranging your furniture is also a good way to make a space less stale and more exciting. Changing the flow of your home could even be possible by swapping your living and dining rooms, for instance.

Small changes can have a big impact on the way we read a room. A splash of color here, or new accessories there, can have as much impact as changing chairs or moving in a new sofa. You really don’t have to buy all-new furnishings to get an all-new impression from your space.

Fall Trends You Want to Follow

By Sklar Furnishings

Design Inspiration, Tips & Trends

September 17, 2020

With the exception of home offices, it’s been a difficult year to announce or predict trends. One of the main reasons is the lack of trade shows and exhibitions where new products and ideas flow. As furnishings and interior design tend to follow larger trends in fashion, the industry has been at a disadvantage being unable to attend and present at shows.

It’s been 9 months since the last major furniture show! That’s a lot of time and potential inspiration lost to the pandemic. We’ve been racking our brains and thinking about some trends we feel will be big this season.

Comfort over everything

In times of uncertainty, comfort is king. Chairs like Siegfried Recliner or Cloud Comfort Air Chair maximize comfort—kicking back with a good book or favorite new show is always better when you’re relaxed and supported. The bed is always popular in the fall and winter months, and something like the Harlequin Virtuose Motion Mattress that can turn any bed into an adjustable maximizes your bedrest without changing your whole bedroom.

Beautiful Home Offices

This trend is obvious. We’ve covered it a lot while the Work from Home revolution was getting underway, but there’s one theme about home offices that we feel is most important: flexibility. Having a desk like the BDI Centro Lift, that can easily switch between standing and sitting, is important to keep the body engaged. Flexibility in terms of location is also important, the BDI Bink Mobile Media Table supports working wherever you want.

Living Outdoors

Embracing the outdoors is a natural side effect of staying home more. We’re blessed with an amazing climate year-round, when it’s not too hot, so we can use durable pieces like the Surf Sun Chaise or Moma Bar Table to create places for relaxation and entertainment. With a collection like the Jardin Couture Diva Set, you can set up outdoors with a coffee table, dining table and chairs, and even a daybed for open air napping.

Dining Dichotomy

Trends in dining continue along two lines of thought: formal and casual. Formal dining spaces are best evoked by such pieces as the Planer Table and Belinda Chair, which possess a more traditional look. Casual dining spaces benefit more from rounded designs like the Clessidra Table and Lea Chair to create openness and irregularity.

Neutral Colors

All shades of blue are still predominant—as a major chromatic element in Coastal Contemporary style, this makes sense. For other colors we see a huge variety, but if we had to narrow it down to a trend, we’d say that overall there is a large movement towards neutral and calming tones balanced with the odd pop of bold color.

Phenomenal Fall

In terms of trends, fall seems like it will be pretty relaxed, with a focus on neutral colors, maximizing comfort, and creating highly liveable outdoor spaces at home. While they’re simple, we love these trends, and look forward to seeing how they’ll develop!

Premier Leather Seating for Your Luxurious Home

By Sklar Furnishings

Design Inspiration, Tips & Trends

September 9, 2020

When it comes to any space, seating makes or breaks it. Seating is where we relax, unwind, share, and come together. Making the most of it is a great way to make spaces more inviting and functional.

When it comes to seating, there are few materials more luxurious and comfortable than leather. It’s elegant and welcoming, functional and luxurious, and can make furniture look its best. Leather furniture is an element that can be the focus of the room, creating a core to build on.

The following pieces are among our most luxurious leather furnishings:

Better in Leather

The Bracci Style Sectional is a wonderful sofa that’s supremely comfortable. Bracci often include suede leather for a truly sumptuous finish, and build their sofas higher off the ground and with deeper seats than the usual European design. Soft internal cushioning with memory foam makes this a wonderfully relaxing and luxurious sofa. As a piece of design furniture, tufting adds elegance and the overall structure is open, regular, and attractive.

The dining room also benefits from the style and substance of leather. Consider the Reflex Vela Dining Chair, a ravishing design with two-tone possibilities. Two leathers or a leather with fabric option create endless potential for aesthetics. A beautiful base and rounded design make these chairs attractive and comfortable in addition to being endlessly versatile.

Gamma International’s Windsor Sofa is a great centerpiece for any living space. Built over a hardwood frame, this large sofa is upholstered in Gamma’s signature thick leather and completed with their remarkable stitching—their stitching is renowned around the world. Generous proportions and regular, clean lines make this an excellent and geometrically-inspired addition to the living room.

If you want to elevate your space, the more abstract Koinor Mellow Sofa is an excellent choice. Curvy and sinuous, this sofa looks as if it is folded once over itself, creating an enchanting presence that can add a playful, chic, and modern impression to any room. Leather really complements this design, adding elegance and comfort in equal measure.

We often bring up Il Loft’s Moonstar Lineare Sofa, which has a timeless appeal, strong lines, and gorgeous craftsmanship. With a modular basis, charming profile, and unique design elements like its oval feet, or deceptively thin frame, this versatile sofa exudes a welcoming and inviting atmosphere. In leather, this couch possesses that extra bit of elegance.

Versatile and Luxurious

Of all the materials you can use for upholstery, leather has a richness that’s second to none. Inviting, comfortable, and definitely luxurious, leather will always make a solid impression in the living room, and makes for one of the best seating materials in the world.

More than just thrilling the visual sense, leather possesses a texture that can be fine-tuned to individual preference—from soft suede to thick and durable leather. Add a plethora of modern color options, and it’s not hard to see how leather can really bring any living room together.

Creating Studious Spaces for Your Little Ones

By Sklar Furnishings

Design Inspiration, Tips & Trends

September 1, 2020

With the full details of the upcoming school year still uncertain, this isn’t a bad time to think about how your home is equipped for studying and learning. Whether your child’s school is going online-only, in-class, or some hybrid, you can help them succeed and thrive by creating a quiet place at home that supports learning.

It’s important to keep young scholars away from traffic and distraction, out of the living room and kitchen and in a space where they can do their homework in peace. We’re blessed with a climate where kids can go outside most of the year to comfortably study or read, but having an inside space is equally important. Creating a studious space isn’t difficult.

Studious Furnishings

The Aramith Billiard/Dining Table is a unique piece we included because of a colleague who told us she would reward her kids for finishing their homework. She put this table in the games room and once her kids were done with their work, she would reward them by letting them play a game of pool. Not a bad idea!

If you’re going with the above idea or any other idea, something like the BDI Centro File Cabinet is a perfect addition to a study space. With a sliding printer shelf, filing drawer, and two storage drawers, this file cabinet supports a tidy, productive, and organized space.

Once the day’s studying and learning is done, kids need to relax just like we do after a day’s work. We recommend something really comfortable like the Himolla Aura Chair, a stealth recliner with lots of color options that’s sublimely comfortable, and great for the whole family.

In Support of Focus

Making the most of our spaces is a good way to deal with the uncertainty of this school year, and making sure young scholars have a space dedicated to studying is important every year. This is a great opportunity to find and develop a separate space for uninterrupted learning.

Creating a flexible space that converts for learning during the day, and converts back at night is another great option. In any case, it’s a space that’s not just handy and healthy for kids, but for anyone who needs a peaceful, calm space to focus.

Comfort in Motion Furniture

By Sklar Furnishings

Design Inspiration, Tips & Trends

August 25, 2020

Furniture that supports us properly can make a big difference during a normal day and a vast difference when we’re worse for wear. Motion furniture moves in such a way that it supports the main parts of the body to reduce pressure and enhance comfort, and it can be very helpful for those who struggle with physical limitations or general weakness, and can even aid good posture.

For many years, the words ‘motion furniture’ summoned images of bulky, blocky, and aesthetically unappealing pieces, but that’s far from the truth nowadays, as the following pieces prove.

Magnificent Motion

While not strictly motion furniture, American Leather’s Cloud Comfort Air Chair features a weight balanced mechanism which makes sitting in it an absolutely smooth experience. The mechanism allows this chair to move with your body to keep you comfortable in any position without resistance, as if it were custom made for you. Gorgeous design and plentiful upholstery options support aesthetic potential as well.

We often bring up Himolla’s Aura Chair around the Sklar offices, we love how unassuming it is. You’d think it was just another beautiful swivel chair with a high back, but then it transforms into a comfortable, supportive, fully-featured recliner in seconds. In terms of comfort, it’s about as good as anything we’ve experienced, and the style opportunities are vast and fabulous as well.

Bracci’s Smart Sectional is another powerhouse sofa with seating for everyone and luxurious upholstery, as well as supportive motion features. A modular design allows this sectional to fit any space. Memory foam enhances comfort while the reclining feature is motorized and easy to control. This sectional features a chaise that moves forward, a feature unique to the Smart frame.

The Divine Motion Sectional from Planum is visually stunning—it’s got a complex appearance but is simply delightful as seating. A motion feature allows the seat to move along with the head and footrests to ensconce you in comfort. A modular design means that everyone can be seated, reclining, and comfortable together. The Divine’s styling is a unexpected and abrupt, just right for a more avant garde space.

Choose Comfort

Motion furniture is a great investment—with the home taking on new importance these days, a little extra comfort will go a long way. Also, for those who struggle with strength or posture issues, the extra support is a definite advantage over stationary furniture.

Feeling the motion? Browse our motion furniture selection online, get in touch with our experts, take a virtual tour or come in person to the Sklar showroom, which we’re keeping safe for visitors and staff.

Designers often hear how their clients have trouble living in smaller spaces. Nothing seems to fit right and the space becomes uncomfortable. The process to find the right furniture while still being functional can be hard, but we are here to help make it easier for you.

Small spaces can be a challenge, but the following furnishings are up to making them usable, beautiful, and comfortable.

Smart, Small & Superb

We have to start with Tumidei’s On/Off Alcova Wall Unit, a fabulous piece designed from the ground up to maximize the use of space. This beautiful integrated unit can be configured to expand into a bed, bench, or wardrobe to provide a dual-use piece that’s ideal for flex rooms and compact places where every square foot counts.

The Bowie Comfort Sleeper from American Leather is the gold standard of pullout beds, with a slim profile that saves space when used as a couch, and a pullout bed that stays high off the ground for a more comfortable sleep. Ideal for transforming a smaller living room or any side room into a comfortable guest room. Your biggest issue here will be getting your guests to leave!

Tonelli’s Livingstone Extendable Dining Table combines modern aesthetics with the classic extendable dining table. Sturdy, built-in wings are attached by chromed metal mechanisms and tucked under the table as part of the design, not hidden or recessed. Gorgeous folded or unfolded, this table is available in many sizes and finishes to suit any size and style of room.

Few pieces we have can transform as dramatically as Ozzo Italia’s A4 Extendable Console Table. In its console configuration, it’s sleek enough to fit unnoticed in a hall or alcove, while still offering enough surface area for decor and storage. When company comes knocking, this table can be unfolded to seat up to 10 people—a telescopic mechanism makes setup quick and easy. Crafted from gorgeous hardwood, with a contemporary appearance and functional essence, this table is beautifully flexible.

Get the best of both worlds with the Uno Ottoman from American Leather. This versatile ottoman features a comfortable footrest pillow that flips over to become a tray, essentially turning it into a coffee table. Available in both square and circular models, with castor wheels and plentiful finish and upholstery options, this ottoman is the ideal way to double the potential in your living room without crowding it. Our Design Team use a pair in front of the American Leather sleepers to store bedding—plus they roll out of the way easily!

Overcoming Small Spaces

Thoughtful and versatile furnishings can maximize your use of small spaces, and also create the style and mood you desire. There’s a beauty to furniture that’s well-designed and multi-purpose, and the examples above are noteworthy for their ability to reduce frustration and maximize openness, creating a peaceful and roomy impression regardless of the physical limitations of the space.

Captivating Coffee Tables

By Sklar Furnishings

Design Inspiration, Tips & Trends

August 14, 2020

People gather around the coffee table for many reasons: refreshment, relaxation, and respite. No living room is complete without a coffee table that can be perfectly paired with couches and comfortable casual chairs.

Your coffee table is an excellent starting point and a natural centerpiece for the living room. The right table makes a space warmer, more inviting, and more functional. Oh, and did we mention aesthetics? There’s a massive variety of styles to suit any space, and here are some standouts that we are showcasing for you.

Terrific Tables

Let’s begin with the Myflower Table from Naos, a stunning blend of beauty and functionality. With three separate table tops that can be unfurled like the petals of a flower, this coffee table is exceptional for expanding when extra space is necessary. Crafted with chrome, glass, and ceramic, this coffee table makes a warm and playful splash in any space. Even better you get to choose the tops!

Oggetti’s Cubes Coffee Table features a clean, modern flat glass top with plenty of space for books, drinks, accessories, and company. What separates it from the competition is an incredible base with plenty of visual interest presenting an abstract and artful surface with different colors and textures. It’s a simple and functional design paired with a sophisticated and complex aesthetic, making it ideal for modern spaces. Art in the middle of the room!

If regular lines are too harsh for you, then Il Loft’s John Cocktail Table is an ideal selection. With a curvy and flowing profile, this table works best paired and gives an organic impression that’s casual and calm, capable of softening more angular spaces.

For smaller spaces, it’s hard to go wrong with Cattelan’s Sting Tables. These tables can be used singly or in groups. With sturdy steel frames and enough tabletop for one person, they’re ideal in sets of 5 to 6, so everyone has their own. Glossy marble-style ceramic tabletops create an elegant aesthetic to complete a more sophisticated living room.

Cattelan’s Amerigo Table comes in three sizes and heights, making it easy to pair two or three to create a parallel effect. With a broad round tabletop in brushed bronze coated steel, and a titanium coated cylindrical base, this table is stunning. You might even say it has no rough edges. A stylish and functional lip around the tabletop prevents rolling and sliding objects from falling off.

Turn the Tables

The right coffee table can make your living room inviting, cozy, and functional and create the mood and aesthetic you want. Far from just being a functional compliment to a sofa, coffee tables are a great centerpiece and can do a lot of stylistic work in a space.

If you’re looking to make your living room more functional and fabulous, starting with a coffee table is a great idea! If you’re looking for more great coffee tables, browse our online store, or even come by the showroom where we’re keeping visitors and staff safe.

How to Set Up Your Ideal Bedroom

By Sklar Furnishings

Design Inspiration, Tips & Trends

August 5, 2020

The bedroom is where we start and end each day so it is important to make this space  comfortable and inspiring for our wellbeing. A bedroom that you don’t love can start you off on the wrong foot, so let’s work to get it right, and get the rest we need in a stress-free oasis.

There’s many ways to create a stress-free oasis.   Let’s focus on storage, sleep, and convenience.

Better Beds

Huppe’s Frida King Bed offers plenty of style and some surprising functionality. Solid wood legs run along the side of the bed and help create an regal look. The body of the bed is minimal, ideal for creating openness. The headboard is the showstopper, its pillows double as storage pouches and its shelter style sides create a sense of protection.

Conte’s Boiserie Bed is distinguished by its large headboard, making it a perfect centerpoint to create a unified atmosphere in the bedroom. Beyond creating a grand and peaceful impression, the modular headboard tiles also have a second purpose: serving like acoustic tiles to soften and absorb noise creating a more calming environment.

The bedframe is one thing, but your choice of mattress can also make all the difference. While there are many worthwhile mattresses available, we have to highlight the incredibly luxe and comfortable Harlequin Mattress from Literie Laurier, a motion mattress that doesn’t need a special frame or base, which has the mechanism built right in.

Side Storage

While your bed can be a fortress of rest and relaxation, it still requires a few pieces of furniture in supporting roles to truly shine.

Trica’s Absolute line of functional bedroom storage ranges from a single drawer night stand to a six drawer double dresser. Stylish, with clean lines and plenty of potential storage, they’re absolutely ideal for creating an effortless, beautiful and well-organized bedroom environment. Keeping necessities close to your bedside means you won’t have to leave it as often.

Dreamy Bedroom

Making your bedroom a perfect place is worth some careful planning and selection. It can take time to get it right, but the result will be a better life. Storage is important in order to reduce and remove clutter, which is why we’ve highlighted some excellent storage options.

Functionality is important, but aesthetics and atmosphere can also do wonders for your bedroom. Creating a sense of openness or a sense of shelter, depending on your preference, can make a world of difference!
