4 Beautiful Ways to Put Your Accessories on Display

Accessories can change your home from drab to fab by adding artful touches of personality and spirit to the decor of your space. Displaying accessories effectively is a matter of placement and prominence, but it also comes down to the furniture you choose.   Accessories that compliment your furnishings make them shine!

Dappertutto Exhibitor Bookcase

With a simple and transparent glass design that’s on castor wheels for full mobility, the Dappertutto Exhibitor Bookcase is an excellent choice not just for books, but for displaying accessories. Functional and stylish, this bookcase can work well in just about any space, with one of four sizes perfect for different spaces. The shorter size can accent a hall while the full height unit is an ideal addition to the living room. Clean and regular lines ensure that this dapper unit never steals the show!

Arches Shelving Unit

The modern and dramatic Arches Shelving Unit is a standout in its own right, with gleaming chrome arches, an asymmetrical design, and seemingly floating glass shelves. This piece almost goes against the grain of the rule that furniture shouldn’t outshine accessories, but paired with the right kind of dazzling accessories, or bold flowers, these shelves can play a supporting role—and add a little drama of their own. A blend of transparency and solidity make these shelves ideal, and the way the top two shelves jut out past the arches creates a natural showcase.

Air Storage Wall Unit 0439

Despite a mouthful of a name, the Air Storage Wall Unit 0439 is a perfect blend of understated design that offers plenty of storage and display options. Shelves appear to float on their glass supports, allowing free play with light and providing plenty of prominence for your accessories. This effortless blend of materials makes for an airy impression that really allows decor pieces, art, and other contents to shine!

Madrid Console

Sublimely simple, and dramatically poised on steel supports, the Madrid Console is an elegant addition to any room. Flexible, functional, as well as beautiful, this console provides a large uninterrupted surface for displaying accessories, and a small footprint that makes it an easy fit for many spaces. While it’s eye catching in its own right, it draws the eye towards accessories and embellishes their impact.

Subtle and Stunning

Accessories are so important to design.  Making the most of them is always a simple process when the furnishings help to showcase and highlight them. While a stunning piece of furniture can amaze and delight, the right accessories add that personal touch.

As the four examples above show, while the furniture displaying accessories shouldn’t overwhelm what’s displayed, it can still be stylish and attractive. Keep the focus on the fine details, and the rest will follow!

Benjamin Franklin famously wrote, “Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise.” When it comes to living a healthy life, sleep is repeatedly proven to be a most important factor. While modern sleep science has debunked the superiority of early bedtime and early rising, the quality of your sleep is still paramount.

The Harlequin series of mattresses from Literie Laurier are the world’s first and only adjustable mattresses—a built-in mechanism means the mattress is all you need, there’s no special base to interrupt your aesthetic. You can sit comfortably to watch TV, read, or simply relax—and the Harlequin is the only mattress where your feet can rest lower than your legs. For sleeping, it supports and eliminates pressure for those who sleep on their back, side, or stomach.

Featuring Bluetooth controls that pair with your phone or tablet, a liquid smooth movement system, high tech materials, and settings that calibrate to your body, the Harlequin collection offers seriously immersive comfort. The collection includes four models aimed at different needs, but all come standard with Zero Gravity support, full articulation, and top quality materials all handcrafted in Canada.

Pierrot V19 Cooler

At just 10 inches high, the Pierrot is a sleek model that can fit nearly any bed frame, which is why it’s often used by hotels. With a comfortable semi-firm core, NANO LATEX surface, and Harlequin COOLER cover, this mattress stays at a comfortable temperature while providing plenty of adjustability, support, and comfort.

Malia V19 Cooler

With a thicker design than the Pierrot, the Malia comes in two material options: a semi-firm Talalay latex core, or a sumptuously soft microgel version with viscose foam. Each version comes standard with the COOLER cover for perfect temperatures and peaceful sleep.

Thaia V19 Cooler

The sleek Thaia offers both the 10 inch height of the Pierrot as well as the material semi-firm/soft options of the Malia, for a customizable mattress that can easily fit nearly any frame. With standard Harlequin series features, plus a COOLER cover for comfortable temperatures, this is a popular and flexible choice.

Virtuose

The crown jewel of the collection, the Virtuose is handcrafted from raw, organic materials. This semi-firm comfort version features a handmade, padded wool decorative element, GOTS cotton cover, organic latex, alpaca and camel wool, cashmere and silk for a luxurious feeling that’s truly second to none!

Bedrest Fit for Royalty

Literie Laurier have crafted mattresses since 1938, and their Harlequin collection is a bold step into the 21st century in terms of materials and technology. At the core of the collection is the goal of offering splendid sleep and sumptuous comfort, which it delivers in spades. If your bed is your kingdom, your mattress should be a royal fit.

Squeezing Space Out of Your Home

Squeezing Space Out of Your Home

Maximizing space at home is a constant struggle for many of us. As furniture and our stuff piles up we begin to feel cramped and stressed. In any size home, maximizing space is necessary.

We have all faced a lot of changes in the past few months. The biggest change is more people staying and working at home. With this being said,  keeping it roomy and functional is more important than ever. Sklar Furnishings to the rescue!  We’ve got the steps to take and furnishings that can help!

Take Action

The first step you need to take is: declutter! Anything you haven’t worn or used in the last year should go—we recommend donating unused or lightly used items to organizations like Habitat for Humanity.

Once you’ve decluttered, clean everything and everywhere, from the backs of dressers to the tops of ceiling fans. Consider repainting or even hanging wallpaper. Soothing colors and patterns can give a spacious and calming impression. Come into our showroom and we can work with you on a new fresh color palette!

Be creative with your space. Is there a dining room you’re not using? Turn it into a guest room, or a relaxation room away from the TV. Underused furniture? Try using it in a different way or find a new place for it. A dresser can replace a console at the front door and become a storage tool.

Ask yourself what you can store outside vs inside. Outdoor storage like a shed can keep your bike and other gear cleared away. If you don’t have that option, work to find spaces to tuck away outdoor pieces, make them part of your design, so they don’t stick out.

Finally, the habit of tidying up will pay back your effort in no time. Putting your things  away when you get home and not letting stuff pile up in odd places will keep things tidy.

Flexible Furnishings

The Livingstone Extendable Dining Table can help you make the most of your space with two extendable sections on gorgeous metal hinges. The Myles Dining Table is ideal for smaller spaces, and features two sliding sections to expand for company.

Custom closets like Tumedei’s convertible wall unit Composition 277 can replace a den, office, and guest bedroom, provide lots of storage, and can be configured to make the most of any space. The Gravity Wardrobe can transform a wall with serious capacity and lovely aesthetics.

With a sofa like the Adalyn Comfort Sleeper, you can use your guest bedroom as an office or workout room while still providing an excellent bed when your mother-in-law comes knocking.

If your kitchen island is cluttered with boxy barstools and your dining room is crowded with chairs, get the best of both worlds with the Doris P Barstool, with a gas cylinder that can rise to the occasion or be lowered for use at the dining table.

Room to Thrive

Some creativity and effort can help you cut clutter and make rooms feel roomy again. Good furniture can do the rest, giving you the flexibility and unexpected storage to squeeze every drop of space out of your home. After all, your home is a place for you and your loved ones, not for your stuff!

Fabulous Floor Lamps

Floor lamps have always been a great way to bring light into a room. Now they have become pieces of furniture and can help to elevate your style. We love that they are easy to move, easy to place and can help elevate the aesthetics of your room.

Good lighting makes spaces more inviting and comfortable, and great design makes lighting unforgettable! Many floor lamps create a diffuse or scattered light that adds a warm glow to a room, others provide more direct and are perfect next to a comfy reading chair.

Our floor lamp collection is superb, including some unique and artful ones from inventive and cutting-edge designers. Some of the following floor lamps are works of art in their own right.

Aqua Creations

Inspired by natural forms, Aqua Creations create lamps that are really like works of art. For example, the breathtaking Mimosa is inspired by the structure and connectedness of neurons. The less abstract ToTeM provides cool minimalist style with a dash of utilitarian design.

Reflex Angelo

Hailing from the island of Murano, Reflex Angelo use famed Murano glass in their lamps so you know it’s quality through and through. Their Gran Canal is an exquisite lamp with a classical base in glass. The stunning Lucciola’s glass core and mirrored base create an unforgettable presence, plus potential utility with an optional side table addition.

Cattelan Italia

Cattelan Italia’s modern and distinctive designs include some beautiful floor lamps. The dramatic sweep of the Little Flag is an ideal fit for a reading nook or contemporary living room. Meanwhile, the Thriller lives up to its name, with fine lines and an intriguing architectural style.

More Floor Faves

Lladro’s unmistakable Night Bloom is resplendent as a floor lamp, with its intricate ceramic petals pairing perfectly with an unadorned steel base.

The Light Stick F by Catellani & Smith is a truly avant garde design, a wonderful example of minimalism that can fit anywhere. A thin metal rod provides illumination, proving that a slight presence can have plenty of impact.

Arterior’s Roosevelt is classic design with a twist, bringing to mind Gilded Age style as interpreted by more modern sensibilities. At first glance, this lamp could simply be a recovered antique, but closer inspection reveals pleasant surprises.

Illuminating and Invigorating

Good lighting breathes life into any space, and well-designed lighting makes that space unforgettable. Whether you’re reading, playing board games with the family, or simply unwinding after a long day, lighting can make a major difference for your mood and energy. Lighting makes a space cozy and inviting, or serene and restrained, and can support and complete the impression begun by other furniture.

Floor lamps are a key part of creating a lighting setup that’s ideal for you and your space, but also building a specific mood and aesthetic. From understated and restrained lamps to bold and avant-garde, we’ve got just the floor lamp you’re looking for!

Creating and Designing the Perfect Dining Room Setting For Your Condo

Captivating Condo Dining

Condominiums are a great way to have a worry free living space, but they do not always provide a dedicated space for a dining room or the room provided may be tricky to work with. In today’s world having a space for dining has become very important.

In condominiums it is sometimes hard to map out where the dining area should go and what should go in it. If having a dining space is important to you, you may want to create it in another area that you had not thought about, perhaps a flex space or even an extra bedroom.

Terrific Tables

The dining room of course revolves around a great table!  When choosing the right dining table it comes down to what shape you want and the space you have. You can choose from many shapes; square, circular, rectangular or oval. Extendable tables provide a great solution for smaller areas, as they can be opened when you have guests and stored tightly away for day to day.

For pure impact, the Splendor Dining Table is an excellent choice. A gorgeous metal base and large wood top lend this table an impressive, even stunning presence with plenty of room for dinner guests.

Thel Empire Dining Table features hardwood legs, metal frame, and a top in various materials including red oak or etched brushed glass. A classic design combines with modern materials to make it stylish and restrained. An added bonus—it comes with extensions!

Splendid Storage

Consoles, sideboards and buffets allow you to store extra dinnerware, decor, accessories, and cutlery for those dinner parties. There is a huge selection available, but one thing to remember is that we can customize to the half inch, so if one doesn’t quite fit, don’t hesitate to ask us to fix that!

The Westin Console features a low, airy, and minimal design that’s perfect for supporting plants or flowers, decor accessories, and candles. With a classic hardwood top and angular metal base, it’s an amazing addition to the dining area.

The Impact Buffet is a striking example of how avant garde design can blend seamlessly with functionality. Plentiful storage is built in, and the decorative fissure that unites them gives this piece its beautiful presence.

If storage and openness are a priority, something like the Lago Air Unit can be ideal. Mounting it on the wall opens up the floor, and the aesthetic blend of solid and transparent is visually enthralling.

Dazzling Dining

We have one final note about flooring: if your dining room has a gorgeous hardwood or marble floor and you don’t want to hide it under a rug, that’s fine! Just keep acoustics in mind—sound can bounce off a ceramic tabletop and the marble floor—luckily canvas paintings or fabric on the windows can dampen the noise.

Living in a condo shouldn’t limit your dining room—there may be some hard choices to make, but if you love a gracious and inviting dining space, they’ll ultimately be easy to justify. We can help you customize sizes, so if your spot doesn’t quite fit the specified dimensions of a piece, just contact us and we can figure out the rest!

Ideal Bar Stools For Your Space

The bar stool and counter stool is a flexible and fabulous piece of furniture that can complete any space. No kitchen island is complete without several counter stools, ideal for letting guests sit in on prep, or to enjoy a quick breakfast. They are a great way to provide fun seating for all your guests!

We carry many styles of bar stools and counter stools. They can vary from formal to casual, they can be fixed or swivel, and they can be hydraulic which makes raising and lowering the seat super easy! Which one works best depends on your home, your preferences and your counter height. Here we show you some of our favorite partners!

Peressini

We love Peressini’s stylish designs and amazing stools, but what takes them over the top is their “Seating My Way” program, which allows buyers to choose materials, shapes, and base styles for a perfect custom fit.

The Doris P is a modern design with a hydraulic lift, combining a glamorous chromed base with a curvacious and comfortable seat. The aptly named Glamour can be adapted as a barstool or counter stool with hydraulics, making it flexible as a chair/stool and is stunning as either.

 Constantini

The more formal and elegant designs of Constantini can really heighten the appearance and functionality of your space. The stunning Resort Barstool can be configured with a bold round or square back and legs or cylinder base. The Charm Barstool features an enchanting wood rib back and comes from a collection which also includes dining and accent chairs for a more unified space.

Catellan

Catellan’s wonderful designs are always a hit and their barstools are no exception. The Arcadia Couture Barstool is a reimagining of their ever-popular Arcadia Chair—’couture’ in this sense means an upholstered back. The Toto X Barstool is a lovely minimalist design that’s ideal for smaller spaces and surprisingly comfortable, given its slight profile.

Kartell

Kartell’s iconic designs don’t stop at chairs and tables, unsurprisingly they have some very imaginative and striking bar stools as well. We love the Charles Ghost Barstool, a playful design with plenty of quirky color options and a truly amazing, retrofuturist presence. Since it’s crafted from solid polycarbonate, it’s weatherproof and sturdy.

Swell Seating

Stools are visually appealing, comfortable, and have plenty of uses around the home. From completing a kitchen island as a social space to establishing that in the home bar you’ve been thinking about, they can elevate or energize just about any space with high (or even low) surfaces.  Modern materials and designs make them aesthetically flexible.

Inspired, but didn’t see what you wanted above? Browse our selection online and find the perfect fit for your space! Or book a 1-on-1 consultation in our showroom which remains safe for visitors and staff.

Vondom Revolution

Vondom’s Vivacious Innovation

Vondom Furniture is among one of our favorite furniture designers. They have a knack for creating beautiful but simple designs paired with creative uses of material and form. Vondom’s work is artful and unforgettable, ranging from bare and minimal to lush and luxurious.

Vondom has attracted plenty of attention from around the world. Their influence continues to expand throughout the world.  Vondom’s commitment to great design, high standards, and art has yielded a number of unforgettable collections and made them irresistible.

A Brief History

Founded in 2006 in Valencia, Spain, Vondom quickly grew to become a major force in outdoor furniture. Their innovative pieces and sculptural approach made them hard to ignore, and their presence at major design shows around Europe ensured they would make waves in the design world.

Vondom actually started with a line of planters, and grew from there to collaborate with acclaimed designers. They’ve won recognition from publications worldwide as well as nominations and awards from big design events like Red Dot (3 wins in 2020), Good Design, and NYC X DESIGN.

Design Principles

Vondom’s approach is eclectic and cutting edge. Their commitment to sustainability comes first and foremost, which they prove in action: all their products are made with recycled materials. All the pieces in their most recent collection, Revolution, are made specifically with recycled plastic waste. This act of sustainability is not just part of a trend, but rather an homage to the sea that borders their city, involving collaboration with fishermen’s associations around the Mediterranean to harvest plastics.

In their established collections, Vondom demonstrates versatility with pieces that range from imaginative to minimalist. There is plenty of variety in function and appearance with the avant-garde forms of Vondom’s furnishings, from the strikingly geometrical Vertex Chair or Adan Stool to the more curvilinear shapes of the bold Moma Bar Stool or whimsical Chrismy Tree. Many Vondom pieces are weatherproof and durable enough for outdoors, and yet chic enough to grace interior spaces.

Rotation moulding is used to make many of their pieces with hollow spaces, making them lighter and less materially intensive to create. Maximizing the yield of something already made with recycled materials speaks to their sustainable approach, a manufacturing process that builds on their tradition of being avant-garde.

A Creative Emergence

In just 14 years Vondom has advanced the state of outdoor furnishings. We’re quite familiar with entirely functional outdoor furnishings, or heavy and complicated wood pieces—Vondom’s vibrant designs are a breath of fresh air that make outdoor space as chic and exciting as the indoors.

Innovation, design, and sustainability are central to Vondom’s approach and what makes them stand out not just visually, but in terms of ethos. When cutting-edge design meets superb new manufacturing processes and a greater vision, the design world proves itself to be up to the challenges of the modern world.

Tips To Give Your Home That “Wow” Impact

By Sklar Furnishings

Design Inspiration, Tips & Trends

October 6, 2020

First impressions are important. In life, you only get one. At home, they keep a space interesting and make it exciting for our guests. We’re huge fans of the WOW factor, bringing on the bold, bright, big, surprising furnishings and design elements that thrill the senses.

When introducing the ‘WOW factor’ into your home, it pays to be cautious. If you go overboard, your space will seem distracting and chaotic, and if you don’t go big enough, you’ll be haunted by the sense that your space is boring. The following pieces are great starting points.

Spectacular Samples

This summer, we finished a project redoing a condo in Fort Lauderdale that was all about WOWING people. A custom floor to ceiling mirrored wall in the living room was a major feature, building on the themes for the place and treating the eye to something totally unexpected. Talk about accent walls!

Custom work never fails to build ‘wow factor’, but there isn’t always the budget, intent, or time for it. In such cases, furnishings and decor will have to do—there’s so much they offer!

One stunning piece we used prominently in the Fort Lauderdale project was the Central Mirror. This impressive mirror presents a surprising geometry from any angle, splitting in the middle and presenting a circular, flat face. With three reflections all at different angles, this mirror will wow onlookers.

Furnishings don’t need to be maximalized to make a splash. For example, the Air Shelf 0381 makes a grand impression without any flashiness. In fact, the relative absence of vertical supports is what makes the shelves appear to float, creating a wow factor by taking away an expected part of shelving.

The dramatic PostKrisi Suspension Lamp creates a bold impression with its split sphere design and raw edges. We are used to lighting that’s united and smooth, and the PostKrisi’s departure from that style is what makes it unexpected and interesting, making it perfect for bringing a bit of danger into a space that would otherwise be dull.

The impressive Leaf Lampadario features handmade leaf pendants hanging from a mirrored base with built-in LEDs—optional gold leaves creating a brilliant contrast. This unforgettable suspension lamp is a centerpiece, the one in our showroom never fails to catch plenty of attention.

The Lucky Bird Garden Statue is a very unexpected piece, bringing the wow factor to the outdoor space. Multiple colors, shapes, and textures combine in a playful design that nobody will expect—especially if it’s lurking among plants!

World of WOW

The WOWfactor can be as simple as small and creative changes to an established space, especially if it’s already gorgeous. A little surprise, visual interest, or splendor can keep a space more interesting for us over time, which helps elevate our mood and energy as well.

You don’t need to rebuild a space or get custom work to make it look astonishing. Sometimes all a humdrum home needs to shine is a splash of designer style.

Why Contemporary Furniture Is A Must Have

By Sklar Furnishings

Design Inspiration, Tips & Trends

October 5, 2020

It’s easy to get lost on the way to defining contemporary as a style. It borrows elements from lots of other movements and folds them into itself, creating plenty of red herrings and aesthetic dead ends which can lead people astray.

Unlike Mid Century Modern, which ran from the mid 1940s to the late 1960s, contemporary is not so well defined. It’s today, but it’s also influenced by yesterday, and it’s often confused with modern. But fear not, there are some signature aspects to contemporary furniture, specifically: well-defined lines, a reduction of unnecessary detail and ornament, and a focus on function.

Contemporary furniture is a must-have because lets a space speak for itself. It’s the opposite of busy aesthetics, lending itself to stark contrasts that can be softened by color and decor when desired. It’s a constantly-evolving style, which makes it versatile and accessible to everyone.

Cool and Contemporary

The Verona Sofa is a great example of contemporary’s general rules. You can see the definite lines and simple, functional design that allow it to work in any space, along with its strictly neutral color options. This sectional adds function without calling too much attention to itself, but still has a few stylish touches such as the feet, and softens its lines just slightly with its rounded edges. All in all, this sectional perfectly demonstrates the subtlety of the style.

The Icon Dresser and Nightstand also possess a well-defined function that clearly inspires their design. Carefully designed to create a maximum of storage options, both the dresser and nightstand have plentiful surface area as well as drawers, combined with striking lines and simple shapes. Uncomplicated design is a hallmark of both modern and contemporary styles, but in contemporary style there is a tendency to take it as far as possible.

BDI’s Corridor Quad-Wide Media Cabinet is another piece of utility furniture elevated by the contemporary ethos. A simple profile hides a central drawer flanked by two cabinets, covered up by vertical wooden slats which allow remote controls to function. Visually and aesthetically, the Corridor features the stark lines, simple shapes, and unobtrusive presence that’s typical of the contemporary movement.

Contemporary Material

Contemporary style has benefited greatly from contemporary manufacturing, and nowhere is this more apparent than in upholstery and fabrics. We often refer to Performance Fabrics, which are the new generation of stain-resistant, durable fabrics which have finally overcome the subpar feel of previous materials. They can be as soft as cashmere or cotton, and can convincingly convey leather-like textures as well.

Here and Now

Contemporary style is a powerful and ever-evolving aesthetic that’s supported by new ways of using space and new technologies. We think that contemporary furniture’s emphasis on functionality without overwhelming details is a great way to build personality in a space or leave it intentionally open. As the contemporary style grows, so does its potential to maximize your enjoyment of your home.

Enter The World of Wall Sconces

By Sklar Furnishings

Design Inspiration, Tips & Trends

October 1, 2020

A wall sconce is a type of lighting fixture that is attached to the wall. The sconce is a very old form of a fixture. It used to be used with candles or oil lamps.

The wall sconce has remained a fixture in interior design for many reasons. Wall sconces take zero floor space and deliver a good amount of light for their small footprint. They’re also remarkably beautiful, and a great way to build on a theme or play off a motif in any space.

With new materials and styles, there’s a wall sconce to suit any space, and we’ve got some amazing pieces in our showroom.

Enchantingly Ensconced

We begin with the Nightbloom Wall Sconce from Lladro, an enchanting design from Marcel Wanders. Handcrafted in Spain, this sconce features porcelain leaves emanating from the light fixture, which diffuse the light and create an organic impression that’s completed by fine details and a matte finish.

The Charleston Applique Wall Lamp, from Reflex Angelo, is carried on the strength of fine crafting and materials. A stainless steel body holds a shade made of Murano glass rods. These rods diffuse light wonderfully, and in color options like amethyst or aquamarine, they can add a splash of unexpected brightness to complement or contrast a room.

The Terra Applique Wall Lamp, also from Reflex Angelo, is a sleek and impressive example that hugs the wall. A strip of LED lights on a raised, narrow bar provides illumination against a burnished brass finish metal body. This novel design has a minimal profile, maximizing spaces while providing a notable dash of style and the light hat makes a space usable.

Nature clearly inspires the Fan Wall Sconces from Aqua Creations. Using organic forms evoked by silk covered steel, these sconces create the graceful impression of undersea coral structures. A combination of elegance and playfulness makes these a great way to lighten the mood or create serenity.

The Twins Sconce from Barovier & Toso combines craft and materials in an eye-catching design. This elegant and modern sconce maximizes the potential of glass, opaque glass, and chromed steel to deliver subtle and perfectly diffused lighting. A large profile and presence fills larger spaces without crowding out smaller ones.

Terzani’s Frame Wall Sconce is a lovely and minimalist design that creates a big impression. A chromed bracket supports a glass body and lamp that is completed by the addition of a shade clearly inspired by the structure of leaves or of coral growth, creating a brilliant diffusion of light and shadow that delights the eye.

Light the Walls

Wall sconces are a timeless part of interior design, and new materials, ideas, and manufacturing techniques have created sconces to fit any space or style. From the minimal profiles and low power consumption made possible by LED lights, to the maximized impressions made possible by modern polymer, glass, and steel—we’re living in an excellent epoch for lighting design that truly shines.
