Operation Christmas Sklar

Despite a difficult and tumultuous year around the world and at home, there’s plenty to feel blessed about. This is the time of year when friends and family come together to celebrate at home and  it’s important to spread that feeling far and wide.

Sklar is and always has been very involved in and around our community—but giving doesn’t end at the border. Our founders, the Howards, have been involved with Operation Christmas Child since 1995, and Sklar’s been involved since we opened our doors.

Operation Christmas Child

Operation Christmas Child was started by Franklin Graham in 1993, when an Englishman asked him if he would be willing to use his name and audience to fill shoeboxes with gifts for children in Bosnia, which was in the midst of a bitter war.

Franklin agreed, and by Christmas time that year, over 28,000 shoe boxes packed with gifts were sent to children in the Balkans. The idea was popular and became Operation Christmas Child, which has taken place every year since. To date the organization has helped deliver over 178 million gifts to deserving children in more than 150 countries, spreading holiday cheer!

The idea is simple. Take a shoebox, decorate it with wrapping paper, and fill it with gifts that will brighten a child’s life. If you’re out of ideas,  they even provide some great ideas for girls and boys in three age brackets. The core of the box is the ‘wow item’, a medium-sized gift that will immediately delight. Then add other small toys and creative supplies like pencils, crayons, stickers—even crafted items or non-liquid toiletries. You have a lot of room to be creative and have fun!

Why We Do It

Every year the Sklar team works to put together about 50-75 boxes. This project creates a rewarding feeling of being able to give back. Many of the deserving children who get these gifts lead difficult lives in troubled parts of the world, and sending a ray of sunshine their way can hopefully help make a difference for them and remind them that there’s people out there who care.

The Spirit of Christmas

Operation Christmas Child is a great way to get together and make the world better! You can track the box all the way to delivery which is exciting and a great way to know where your box is going!

June 10, 2020

We are happy to announce that we are open regular hours! We’re following all CDC guidelines to create a safe environment for our Team and our Guests, and remain ready to adjust to changes as the restart phases continue.

Shopping locally owned businesses has become more important than ever. By shopping locally you are supporting your community, through jobs, reinvestment, and sustainability.

Shopping Local

During the pandemic, you may have heard a lot about making sure we support our local businesses. This is very important, not just for keeping the community healthier during but also after this pandemic. When your spending is through large multinational companies, very little of that money will make it back to our communities. This can have a lasting effect in terms of employment opportunity, livability, and city funding.

As a smaller locally owned company, we can more easily ensure a sustainable supply chain, and we can also keep our carbon footprint small and pursue green environmentally friendly practices. Local businesses are usually good neighbours who give to local causes and charities, and get involved in local issues. In short, local businesses can be much more accountable to their communities than multinationals.

We care about our Community now, and in the future. We want to support it and make it strong—we live here and use all the wonderful resources that are available to us.

Good Neighbors

Sklar wants to be that good neighbor and we are donating 2% of all qualifying purchases from our Spring Sale to the YMCA of South Palm Beach County to fund their youth relief daycare for essential workers.

We are also proud to consistently support the community on many fronts; by donating to and working with worthy causes. These causes include Habitat for Humanity, the Junior League of Boca Raton, The Rotary Club, Our Local Food Banks, the YMCA of South Palm Beach County, and our Military. We also plant a tree for each piece of wood furniture sold, to the National Forest Initiative,we have planted over 5,000 trees!

You can learn more about why and how we support various causes here, and about our commitment to sustainability here.

Here for Boca Raton

We consider it our responsibility to be accountable to the community that makes it possible for us to be a local business owner. We accept this responsibility and are proud to live, work and support our amazing Community!

Community Greening

Sklar Furnishings is making a donation for all of the wood furniture we sell to our community partner, Community Greening. This donation will help them continue their mission of making our community stronger, healthier, and greener!

Community Greening began in 2016. Since this time, the organization has been planting many types of trees in South Florida, in both public and private spaces. We love how they match trees to the needs of communities, planting each tree in the right place.

In addition to planting trees to beautify and improve neighborhoods, Community Greening has planted urban orchards with tropical fruit trees, to address healthier eating and the importance of environmental stewardship. These community resources provide food, shade, and an excellent introduction to growing food.

Community Greening works on many projects in Boca Raton, Delray Beach, and surrounding cities, allowing us to focus our investment in our own backyard. They work with our local youth in Tree Teams, where they work on planting trees and improving neighborhoods, learn about sustainability, and get work experience.

The hospital delivers the highest quality patient care with unrelenting attention to clinical excellence, patient satisfaction and patient safety. Boca Helping Hands

The mission of Boca Helping Hands is as follows: to provide food and emergency assistance to meet basic human needs and long term solutions to break the cycle of dependence. BHH is a community based 501(c)(3) organization that was formed in 1998 by a group of local religious congregations. They started by serving nutritious hot lunches three days a week and giving out bags of groceries to families.

The Food Program has expanded to six days a week with a Family dinner on Thursday nights. Meals are also delivered to housebound disabled and elderly individuals. In April of 2002 a Resource Center was added to help with crisis life situations. Lastly a Job Mentoring Center that provides coaching, guidance and classes was added in 2014 to complement the services that instill dignity and break the cycle of dependence.

At Sklar we have been involved with Boca Helping Hands since we opened the store in 2002. Our first community partnership in conjunction with the Chamber of Commerce was with Boca Helping Hands. Every year our Holiday card gives a $100 coupon to anyone who brings in 3 pieces of non-perishable food. At the end of the food drive Sklar matches this to ensure that we have a lot of food! We run this program well into February so that we can replenish the shelves that seasonally seem to be bare in the months following the generosity of people at the Holidays.

BHH is a well-respected and much needed service in Boca Raton and we are pleased to be a partner with them in helping meet the needs of a growing community.

Headquartered in Boca Raton, Florida, the Museum serves the Palm Beach County community as well as the communities of Broward and Martin Counties.

The Museum offers educational programs to children and adults through permanent and traveling exhibits on the campus or through the educational outreach program, The Traveling Museum. Since inception over 30 years ago, the Museum has helped to educate well over a million children; broadening their awareness of the world and teaching them how to problem solve through creative and scientific exploration. There are opportunities to sponsor, fundraise, volunteer or make a donation to their GoFundMe Campaign so they can continue to provide unique and state of the art enrichment programming.

After receiving approval from the Florida legislature and the governor, it became the 134th allopathic medical school in North America and welcomed its inaugural class in 2011. Sklar is thrilled to send 5 children to camp this summer through the ‘send a kid to camp program’. Memberships and donations help Boca Museum of Art to keep contributing to the cultural and community life of South Florida; learn more or consider sending a kid to camp at www.bocamuseum.org.
