From Sea to Screen

For many of us here in South Florida our waters and beaches are a huge part of our lives, and this is why the entire team here at Sklar Furnishings is so excited about the advances Hunter Douglas has made to help clean up shores around the world.

Washed Ashore

Inspired by the global plastic waste calamity – Hunter Douglas began a journey to produce more ecologically sustainable products. Aware of the nine million tons of plastic waste that are dumped into the ocean every year, the Hunter Douglas team started U-Turn™ – an independent beach and river shore clean-up initiative.

While their collection efforts are impressive (U-turn has avidly collected thirty tons in shores around the world) what is most impressive is the materials are all being processed to use in their products. Hunter Douglas has teamed up with the material engineering company Bionic to create a new line of plastic fabrics for window screens. The resulting GreenScreen® Sea-Tex™ fabrics will be available with the Hunter Douglas line of Designer Screen Shades.

Each square meter of Greenscreen Sea-Tex NXT fabric contains 75g of recycled shoreline plastic.

A Tangible Difference

Plastic waste in the oceans is a growing problem. Some estimates put the amount of plastic waste dumped into the ocean every year at 9 million tons. Seeing that amount of plastic waste and heeding the growing calls for something to be done inspired Hunter Douglas to take action, and led them to Bionic.

Since getting underway, this partnership has reclaimed and turned well over 40 tons of washed ashore plastic from around the world into screen shades. With their ability to take waste from beaches and shores and turn it into beautiful and useful products, Hunter Douglas is making a difference.

Driving Energy Efficiency

We invite you to come meet with one of our Hunter Douglas experts to consider light control, privacy, energy efficiency, automation and countless material options when selecting these exciting new lines.

While the right combination of natural and diffused lighting in a home creates a welcoming atmosphere and a great sensory experience, we can’t help but think how much more special those window treatments will be knowing where they came from.
