2017 is Sklar’s 15th anniversary, and we’re celebrating by giving back to the community that has given us so much. For every month of the year, our team has chosen one local charity that we’ll be supporting through donations, fundraising, and boosting awareness of their great work. These organizations create opportunities, lend a hand to people in hardship, and help make Boca Raton an even better place to live.
The Boca Raton Jewish Film Festival (BRJFF)
For the month of September, Sklar is proudly supporting the Adolph & Rose Levis Jewish Community Center Film Festival. Adolph & Rose Levis Jewish Community Center is a non-profit community agency of the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County. Established in 1983, the center provides a broad range of enriching programs and services for individuals of all ages and abilities to meet the diverse needs of its members, the Jewish community and the community at large.
JCC Jewish Film Festival celebrated its inaugural year by presenting a broad array of 27 exceptional films from the U.S., Israel and around the world all bringing the best of Jewish films to our community. Their mission is to annually provide the newest, most stimulating and thought provoking films that encourage audiences to expand their awareness and understanding of the Jewish world.
Sklar is thrilled to support JCC and engage with their dialogue and programs which explore many diverse perspectives. Learn more at http://levisjcc.org/

Florida Atlantic University
For the month of August, Sklar is proudly supporting Florida Atlantic University (FAU) Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine by making a donation to their White Coats-4-Care program.
FAU’s Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine is one of 147 accredited medical schools in the U.S. The college was launched in 2010, when the Florida Board of Governors made a landmark decision authorizing FAU to award the M.D. degree. After receiving approval from the Florida legislature and the governor, it became the 134th allopathic medical school in North America and welcomed its inaugural class in 2011. With more than 70 full and part-time faculty and more than 1,300 affiliate faculty, the college matriculates 64 medical students each year and has been nationally recognized for its innovative curriculum.
In June 2014, FAU’s College of Medicine launched its first University-sponsored residency in internal medicine. To date, the college has residency programs in internal medicine, general surgery, emergency medicine and psychiatry.
In order to ensure that the region will continue to have an adequate and well-trained physician workforce, Sklar takes a special interest in FAU. We’re proud to offer support to Florida Atlantic University Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine and its hardworking faculty and student body. Learn more at www.fau.edu.

Boca Museum Of Art
For the month of July, Sklar is proudly supporting the Boca Museum of Art ‘send a kid to camp’ program for the summer. The museum traces its history back to 1950, with the establishment of the Art Guild of Boca Raton. This small organization steadily expanded, and its founders progressed from hosting temporary exhibitions to acquiring a permanent collection and dedicated building.
Today, the Official Fine Arts Museum for the City of Boca Raton attracts more than 200,000 visitors annually, making it one of the city’s leading cultural institutions. It houses permanent and travelling exhibitions, provides art education, and runs lectures, film showings, tours and family events throughout the year. Although it welcomes international artworks, Boca Museum of Art emphasizes artists from South Florida, helping make it a truly local institution.
Sklar is thrilled to send 5 children to camp this summer through the ‘send a kid to camp program’. Memberships and donations help Boca Museum of Art to keep contributing to the cultural and community life of South Florida; learn more or consider sending a kid to camp at www.bocamuseum.org.

Habitat for Humanity of South Palm Beach County For the month of April, Sklar is proudly supporting Habitat for Humanity of South Palm Beach County. Habitat for Humanity builds homes for families in need, giving them the stability of a permanent address and the sense of pride that comes with home ownership. Since 1991, Habitat for Humanity of South Palm Beach County has built homes for over 120 area families, at zero interest financing. Freed from the stresses of insecure housing, parents and their children can focus on work and school instead, creating a cycle of achievement.
Habitat for Humanity is a cause that Sklar has been involved with since the store opened in 2002. Our staff have personally worked on builds, and together we have raised a significant amount of money to help house the vulnerable. In fact, we are proud to announce that our third donated home is currently under construction, and we are committed to sponsoring a total of six. Habitat for Humanity are always grateful for gifts of money, furniture and home goods; visit www.habitatsouthpalmbeach.org to donate or register as a volunteer.
March 1, 2017
For the month of March, Sklar is proudly supporting the Junior League of Boca Raton.
It’s hard to believe, but in Palm Beach County alone, almost 200,000 people go to bed hungry every night — 60,000 of whom are children. Food insecurity means that single parents, the elderly, veterans and the working poor are missing meals in order to pay for essentials like transportation, medicine, housing, utilities and education. Providing food to those in need helps ensure that families don’t have to make those choices.
The women of Junior League of Boca Raton work to combat hunger, promote child welfare, and support non-profits in our community. Across a combined 25,000 hours of volunteered time, they raise more than $250,000 per year for organizations including Boca Helping Hands, Spirit of Giving Network, and Florence Fuller. Their initiatives against food insecurity include Feeding Our Community and the Boca Raton Community Garden, where families can lease plots and grow their own nutritious produce.
In support of their great work, Sklar Furnishings is hosting a month-long Foodraiser, with donations going to Junior League and Feeding South Florida:
Bring three cans of healthy, non-perishable food into Sklar in the month of March, and we will give you a $50 cash card, valid until September 2017 and good for anything in the store with no restrictions.
Junior Service League was founded in 1971, to encourage volunteering and community service by women. From a total of 26 original members, the organization now known as Junior League of Boca Raton has grown to more than 700 accomplished and motivated volunteers. These include some of the most influential women in South Palm Beach County Area, dedicated to helping local women and children reach their full potential. Support or join Junior League of Boca Raton at www.jlbr.org.

For the month of January, Sklar is proudly supporting the George Snow Scholarship Fund. George Snow was a former teacher who disappeared while piloting a helicopter in 1980. Two years later, the Snow family established the George Snow Scholarship Fund in his memory.
The George Snow Scholarship Fund provides four-year college scholarships to promising high school graduates in Broward and Palm Beach Counties, with no restrictions on their choice of school. By helping students earn their degrees, the George Snow Scholarship Fund improves their futures and equips them to contribute to their communities in the long term.
To date, the Fund has awarded $8.2 million in grants to Snow Scholars. Considered a leader in the field of scholarship administration, it was named the 2015 Scholarship Provider of the Year by The National Scholarship Providers’ Association. Spirit of Giving is a network of over 60 not-for-profit organizations dedicated to helping communities in Southern Palm Beach County. Spirit of Giving partners support one another by sharing information and resources, ensuring better outcomes for local families experiencing hardship. December is a special month at Spirit of Giving, as it’s time for their annual Holiday Gift Drive. Thanks to the generosity of donors and volunteers, some of the less fortunate children in our community will enjoy a very happy holiday season.

All we had to hear at Sklar about Florence Fuller Child Development Center was their mission “to make a difference through education for economically challenged children and families to build a positive future in our community” and we were hooked. A visit to the facility and a look at those happy smiling faces and we knew we were in for the long haul.
More than 40 years ago two women decided that they wanted to give children living in poverty the same educational opportunities as their more affluent peers. They rightly believed that education was the door out of poverty and started with 22 children – today that number has reached over 700 children served every year in 2 campuses.
