A Luminous Transformation at Laurel Oaks

Laurel Oaks is a four-building residential community located in Boca West, one of South Florida’s most prestigious country club communities. While the architecture had good bones, the interiors—especially the lobbies and corridors—had grown dated and dark. Sklar Studio was brought in to reimagine the spaces and deliver a fresh, contemporary update that would uplift the experience of residents and guests alike.

The primary challenge? Light. The original lobbies were poorly lit, with low visibility and a lack of natural brightness—even the front doors were blocking sunlight. Working closely with the Decorating Committee, Sklar Studio led a full-scale design refresh that leveraged reflection, color, and transparency to create a sense of openness and glow.

Playing with Light, Layering with Texture

From the outset, the design concept revolved around the theme of light—enhancing it, bouncing it, and amplifying it through both functional upgrades and decorative finishes. Sklar Studio selected pale, airy tones to lift the palette and layered in Cattelan Italia’s Hawaii Mirrors to reflect both natural and ambient light throughout the day.

In the lobby seating areas, Reflex’s Tau Tables are absolutely stunning and bring together the colors of the lobby. These pieces were paired with standout upholstery selections: Il Loft’s Mind Chairs in blue graphic fabric, Stylos Armchair in neutral white, and the sculptural Mercury Sofa, accented with coordinating pillows. A custom-made rug anchors the second seating area, its organic shape enhances the space while adding warmth underfoot.

Custom Art, Thoughtful Finishes

One of the more personal touches in the project was the incorporation of a custom artwork piece, created in collaboration with a local studio. After the initial selection, the team requested a subtle increase by adding red to better complement the design scheme—an edit that made the piece feel truly bespoke. Additional layers came from Global Views’ Artisan Fused Glass Wall Panel, a Dirillo Blue Agate Wall Mirror by John Richards and curated silk plants from Lux Art Silks that brought organic texture into the mix.

Enhancing the Everyday

Beyond the lobbies, Sklar Studio also refreshed the first floor corridors, the mailroom, and space by the elevators. The design team chose Il Loft Cubi Benches to add style and functionality inviting places to pause while waiting for an elevator or waiting for a friend.

Throughout the project, Sklar Studio maintained close communication with the HOA Committee, adapting the design through multiple revisions and presentations. Every visit to the showroom inspired new possibilities, leading to a collaborative and rewarding process for everyone involved. The result is a polished, modern update that feels bright, welcoming, and completely reimagined—proof that thoughtful design can truly change the atmosphere of a place.
