Our Commitment to Habitat for Humanity

Sklar Furnishings has been a committed supporter of this organization since its inception, and we are proud to have contributed to the construction and funding of six homes for deserving families.

Our commitment to Habitat for Humanity runs deep. Our Chairman, Rick Howard, served on the Board of Directors for 10 years and played a critical part in the organization’s success. As a board member, he was actively involved in the decision-making processes and worked to ensure that the organization was efficiently managed.

In addition to donating time and resources to the Palm Beach County Habitat for Humanity, Sklar Furnishings also donates products to be sold in their Resale Stores. The proceeds from these stores are a critical source of income for the organization. The money raised through these stores helps fund the building of homes, as well as other programs such as home repair and weatherization. The proceeds also fund the organization’s administrative costs, providing a stable source of income for the organization.

Giving Back: Alzheimer’s Brain Bowl

Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive neurological disorder that affects memory, thinking, and behavior. In the United States, it is estimated that approximately 5.7 million people suffer from Alzheimer’s at the present time, and this number is expected to increase as the population ages. Caring for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia can be challenging and costly, both in terms of personal stress and lost work hours. In addition to the emotional toll on caregivers, there is also a significant financial burden associated with the disease.

To help raise awareness and promote understanding and support for the people of the community coping with Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, the 100 types of Dementia, or a related neurocognitive disorder, Brain Bowl Events Inc., a volunteer-based non-profit organization, organizes an annual luncheon, called the Annual Brain Bowl.

The 9th Annual Brain Bowl is scheduled to take place on February 8, 2023, at Boca West Country Club, and Sklar Furnishings is excited to host a kick-off event for the luncheon on January 17th.

Help Us Help Others

At Sklar, we believe in supporting the community and are always looking for ways to make this world an even better place. As part of our 20 th Anniversary celebrations, we are doing another Cereal Drive with Cereal4All to help fight hunger across the breakfast tables in America.

In conjunction with Hurricane Ian Relief, we have also joined forces with Florida Design to send supplies and essentials to the communities affected by Hurricane Ian. Monetary donations are welcome to purchase additional supplies for future distributions.

And lastly, in the spirit of Christmas, we have been involved with Operation Christmas Child since we opened our doors, and we will continue with the tradition of delivering 50-75 shoeboxes filled with age and gender related gifts, which will be shipped around the world. There is nothing more rewarding than the feeling of being able to give back.

Sklar Furnishings – forever grateful to you all!

Celebrating 20 Years of Making a Difference in our Community

At Sklar Furnishings, one of our goals is to be good neighbors and positively impact the community we live and work in while being good stewards to the planet. This year marks our 20th Anniversary in our location and to celebrate and we have joined hands with Cereal4All – a youth-run NGO based in Boca Raton, founded by 14-year-old twin brothers Jett and Luke Justin – in organizing a Cereal Drive for November.

Luke Justin says, “We aspire to live in a world where every child and family has everyday access to breakfast food in their home. We want to be part of the fight against hunger.” After volunteering with their parents at Boca Helping Hands, Jett and Luke organized their first cereal drive in schools when they were just eight. The brothers have since extended Cereal4All, to several schools including Florida Atlantic University.

Cereal is one of the most favored and expensive items in any food pantry. Easy to source and nutritious, they are an ideal breakfast choice. Moreover, it is a perfect donation because it’s non-perishable and provides whole grains and essential nutrients lacking in many at-risk households and are frequently in short supply at food banks.

We believe in giving back to our communities and encourage people who reside in our neighborhoods to bring Cereal to our showroom for drop-off this month. Many people attending food banks are going through challenging times and might be hesitant to ask for assistance. We want to be part of the fight against food insecurity.

Stepping Up and Giving Back

I want to talk about Hadassah, an organization that has been very meaningful to me and my entire family, for generations which includes my grandmother, mother, sister-in-law, nieces, each inspiring the next. My family has a joke that when I was born, my grandmother called the national office of Hadassah, to make me a member before calling my grandfather to tell him I was born.

Recently I’ve had the honor of being asked to join National Hadassah as the liaison for the Evolve Young Women’s department. This department is tasked to start new young women’s groups in New York and Florida. Before I tell my story, I’d like to tell you what makes Hadassah such a worthy organization.

Making a Difference

Hadassah is a Jewish women’s organization that builds community spirit and gives back locally, but also operates the Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem. This center consists of two hospitals that have been at the forefront of medical care and research for decades, providing and discovering cures in specialized medicine.

One of the most inspiring successes of the Hadassah Medical Center is that it’s patients and staff are Christians, Jews, and Muslims all working together to heal the sick. Medicine is the goal that bridges their differences and brings them together.

Hadassah also sponsors foster communities that operate like boarding schools. These communities take in troubled kids and provide a healthy environment, offering education in everything from farming and animal husbandry to computer science and robotics, they’ve even trained Olympians.

Family and Community

My family has been involved with Hadassah for 4 generations. My mother really inspired me, as a national board member and regional president, she has spent decades working in their philanthropy and major gifts fundraising divisions. Most recently she chairs a $92 million dollar capital campaign for the Medical Center.

As a young girl, I would help my mother stuff envelopes and work events, but I didn’t get involved until I graduated college and was living in NYC. I felt I was missing out on close friendships and deep connections and wanted an outlet where I could meet people and make a positive difference.

Hadassah was a perfect fit. They were involved in lots of local projects, from helping out at nursing homes, to doing blood drives, building awareness for breast cancer and the importance of organ donation, as well as supporting Israel by fundraising for the hospital. I met people who are still my best friends 29 years later.

When I moved to Florida, I joined the local chapter where I continue to meet wonderful people and do good work that includes an awareness program for child trafficking and donating toiletry supplies to the homeless. We do events for the holidays too, run book clubs, and even a yearly challah bake, and fundraise for the hospital.

Now I’ve been asked to step up and join the National Evolve department as a Young Women’s liaison for New York and Florida. My role is to help new groups get started, mentor them, and keep them connected with the National Office. Now I join my mother on the National Board.

Spreading Blessings

Hadassah’s medical work and social programs are part of what makes them so special, and for me it’s not just in the family, but it’s how I found belonging while giving back not just to the Jewish community, but to the community at large.

Being able to work at the national level to pass the torch to future generations is an honor, and I look forward to spreading the blessings I’ve enjoyed, and encouraging more people to get involved.

Giving Back: Our Local Focus

Sklar Furnishings is always looking for meaningful ways to make the world a better place. We feel it is important to give back to our Community that we live and work in. We believe it is important to be a positive force in our own backyard.

Sklar has had a partnership with the National Forest Foundation since we opened. We have planted over 6000 trees in the Forests of North Florida. Recently we met a local organization that gives back to our Community called Community Greening. We like that they are in our backyard and we can see the difference our support will make!

Community Greening

Since our business consumes a lot of wood, we’ve always focused on ways to offset that demand. Since 2016, Community Greening has been planting many types of trees in South Florida, in public and private spaces. We love how they match trees to the needs of communities, planting the right tree in the right place.

In addition to planting trees to beautify and improve neighborhoods, Community Greening has planted 3 urban orchards with tropical fruit trees, to address healthier eating and the importance of environmental stewardship. These community resources provide food, shade, and an excellent introduction to growing food.

Community Greening works on many projects in Boca Raton, Delray Beach, and surrounding cities, allowing us to focus our investment in our own backyard. They hire local youth to work in Tree Teams where they work on planting trees and improving neighbourhoods, learn about sustainability, and get work experience.

As new partners, we will donate a tree to Community Greening with each purchase of a wood piece to help them continue their mission of making our community stronger, healthier, and greener!

BHH distributes more than 80,000 pantry bags each year at five Palm Beach County locations and serves over 90,000 hot meals annually, six days per week.

Boca Helping Hands

Boca Helping Hands (BHH) is a community-based nonprofit that provides food, medical and financial assistance to meet basic human needs as well as education, job training and guidance to create self-sufficiency. Through its various assistance programs, BHH supports over 27,000 people annually.

Sklar Furnishings helps BHH by running food drives, from Cereal to Can Goods.

Close to Home

Sklar Furnishings believes in supporting our Community. Whether that’s creating healthier and more vibrant neighborhoods, or helping to make sure everyone has access to what they need to live, issues close to home are close to our heart.

We are so excited to build a new partnership with Community Greening, we’re making sure that our efforts are focused on the needs and future of our community and the surrounding areas. And to continue our food drives with Boca Helping Hands. After all, we’re blessed to be here and want to ensure everyone has the same feeling!

Sklar Furnishings and Santa

Sklar Furnishings and Santa

Christmas is a highlight of every year for us at Sklar, a season of joy and giving and togetherness. It is important to Sklar Furnishings that we give back to the community where we live, work and play.  Our goal of supporting the community has always been a great way to stay involved, aware, and make sure we make an impact.

Sometimes it’s just plain fun!  In giving back we have a tradition of giving holiday cheer to children, both around the world with Operation Christmas Child, and closer to home with various initiatives. In the past years, following a history of cooperation and admiration for their hard work, we’ve partnered with the YMCA for a special Christmas event.

 The YMCA of Boca Raton

Among the Boca Raton YMCA’s many worthy programs is a preschool that’s dedicated to providing developmentally appropriate education for the little ones in the community. We are big admirers, so we like to add a little special event each year to spread some extra joy and cheer!

Our contribution is books. We buy a book for each child in the program and wrap them individually. Next we pack them up for a short journey, and get our team ready to play their part and show up at the school to give out the books and spread some happiness!

Last year was an amazing success. Not only did the kids all get some time with Santa and her elves, but they each got a book to top it off! When Santa entered the classroom, there were cheers, songs, and plenty of Santa hugs (this year Santa hugs may be off the table, but not the cheer). Full disclosure:  Santa is a Sklar Design Associate and the Elves a big part of our Admin department.  We can do it all at Sklar!

It’s very rewarding for us to give back and give cheer at the same time. Though it’s been a difficult year for many of us, giving back helps add a little brightness and some fond memories for everyone. Giving to children, and encouraging the gift of reading skills, is simply icing on the cake!

Spread the Spirit

As our not-so-secret santa shows, giving back to the community can be a lot of fun. We always look forward to getting some fun books and sending Santa and her elves off on their merry way. We all get to help by buying and wrapping books, and share in the glow of spreading goodwill and joy.

It’s rewarding to give back, and while it’s important in general, it’s also a great way of getting us into the Christmas spirit as the season draws near.

You may be wondering who at Sklar plays each part—we don’t want to disclose too much, but Santa is one of our Design Associates, and the elves are our Business Development Ambassador and Receptionist. They deserve a round of applause for the wonderful work they do at Sklar and in the community!

Operation Christmas Child

Operation Christmas Sklar

Despite a difficult and tumultuous year around the world and at home, there’s plenty to feel blessed about. This is the time of year when friends and family come together to celebrate at home and  it’s important to spread that feeling far and wide.

Sklar is and always has been very involved in and around our community—but giving doesn’t end at the border. Our founders, the Howards, have been involved with Operation Christmas Child since 1995, and Sklar’s been involved since we opened our doors.

Operation Christmas Child

Operation Christmas Child was started by Franklin Graham in 1993, when an Englishman asked him if he would be willing to use his name and audience to fill shoeboxes with gifts for children in Bosnia, which was in the midst of a bitter war.

Franklin agreed, and by Christmas time that year, over 28,000 shoe boxes packed with gifts were sent to children in the Balkans. The idea was popular and became Operation Christmas Child, which has taken place every year since. To date the organization has helped deliver over 178 million gifts to deserving children in more than 150 countries, spreading holiday cheer!

The idea is simple. Take a shoebox, decorate it with wrapping paper, and fill it with gifts that will brighten a child’s life. If you’re out of ideas,  they even provide some great ideas for girls and boys in three age brackets. The core of the box is the ‘wow item’, a medium-sized gift that will immediately delight. Then add other small toys and creative supplies like pencils, crayons, stickers—even crafted items or non-liquid toiletries. You have a lot of room to be creative and have fun!

Why We Do It

Every year the Sklar team works to put together about 50-75 boxes. This project creates a rewarding feeling of being able to give back. Many of the deserving children who get these gifts lead difficult lives in troubled parts of the world, and sending a ray of sunshine their way can hopefully help make a difference for them and remind them that there’s people out there who care.

The Spirit of Christmas

Operation Christmas Child is a great way to get together and make the world better! You can track the box all the way to delivery which is exciting and a great way to know where your box is going!

We are happy to announce that we are open regular hours! We’re following all CDC guidelines to create a safe environment for our Team and our Guests, and remain ready to adjust to changes as the restart phases continue.

Shopping locally owned businesses has become more important than ever. By shopping locally you are supporting your community, through jobs, reinvestment, and sustainability.

Shopping Local

During the pandemic, you may have heard a lot about making sure we support our local businesses. This is very important, not just for keeping the community healthier during but also after this pandemic. When your spending is through large multinational companies, very little of that money will make it back to our communities. This can have a lasting effect in terms of employment opportunity, livability, and city funding.

As a smaller locally owned company, we can more easily ensure a sustainable supply chain, and we can also keep our carbon footprint small and pursue green environmentally friendly practices. Local businesses are usually good neighbours who give to local causes and charities, and get involved in local issues. In short, local businesses can be much more accountable to their communities than multinationals.

We care about our Community now, and in the future. We want to support it and make it strong—we live here and use all the wonderful resources that are available to us.

Good Neighbors

Sklar wants to be that good neighbor and we are donating 2% of all qualifying purchases from our Spring Sale to the YMCA of South Palm Beach County to fund their youth relief daycare for essential workers.

We are also proud to consistently support the community on many fronts; by donating to and working with worthy causes. These causes include Habitat for Humanity, the Junior League of Boca Raton, The Rotary Club, Our Local Food Banks, the YMCA of South Palm Beach County, and our Military. We also plant a tree for each piece of wood furniture sold, to the National Forest Initiative,we have planted over 5,000 trees!

You can learn more about why and how we support various causes here, and about our commitment to sustainability here.

Here for Boca Raton

We consider it our responsibility to be accountable to the community that makes it possible for us to be a local business owner. We accept this responsibility and are proud to live, work and support our amazing Community!
