The 1960s had a distinct, glamorous aesthetic, driven by the goal to entertain and gather with ease. There are lessons from this look that we can apply in our homes today, and if you are lucky enough to still have pieces from the era, now is the time to let them shine.

One great way to get inspired is to turn to films from the era like the 1968 Peter Sellers classic, The Party. The film is set during a Hollywood party gone awry, but is the perfect way to reflect on the era’s sensibilities towards how to decorate a home for entertaining. Here’s some furniture that appears in the film and how you can adopt the look in 2016.

Clear dining chairs: Square, clear chairs are featured in the film and are placed at a very long, traditional, dark wooden dining table. For a modern take on this look, place clear chairs like Kartell Lou Lou Chair at a circular table made of wood.

Curved furniture in statement colors: In the film we see many examples of curved chairs and couches, similar to the Glamour Armchair and the Menlo Park Sectional. These shapes, accompanied by bold upholstering make for a big, cheerful pop of color. Many times colors that aren’t neutrals like mustards and deep blues can function with nearly the same level of versatility as whites and grays.

Luxe patio furniture: Make a seamless transition from dinner indoors to nightcaps outside with beautiful patio furniture. In the film, the living room opens up to the backyard with a prominently featured pool, flanked by patio furniture. Tamiami Outdoor Collection of colorful, basket weave-inspired outdoor chairs are very reminiscent of 1960’s patio furniture. Kartell Mr. Impossible Side Chair works both indoors and out, and has a very 60’s inspired silhouette.

Glass tabletop coffee tables: The living room in the film features a coffee table with a glass tabletop and heavy, oval-shaped base. Get a modern adaptation of this look with the Triston Coffee Table, which features an oval tabletop made of glass.

House plants: Indoor plants are prominently featured in the movie, bringing life to otherwise dull spaces. While indoor plants never really go completely out of style, they are super trendy at the moment. They add vibrancy to any room and are proven to improve people’s moods. Succulents are easy to take care of and are a go-to for many homeowners looking for easy to care for plants.
