Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868-1929) began his career as an architect associated with the Glasgow School (derisively nicknamed the ‘Spook School’ by traditionalists who found their brand-new aesthetic unpleasant). Members of the Glasgow Group were designers and artists inspired by Celtic, Japanese and Arts and Crafts influences. They broke away from historical styles and in turn influenced the Modern Movement which emerged in the 1920s.

As the 19th century ticked over into the 20th, Mackintosh began to see himself as more than a designer of buildings; he wanted to design every detail within them; down to color schemes and household items. He designed the Glasgow School of Art between 1897 and 1909, and in 1903 he created the furnishings and interiors of a Glasgow tearoom for Miss Kate Cranston.

In 1904 Mackintosh secured a commission to design a house for publisher Walter Blackie; he and his wife Margaret MacDonald designed the entire house and its contents, including furnishings and decor.

Mackintosh furniture is characterised by lean geometric shapes, exaggerated proportions, and limited color palettes. Among the pieces created specifically for Hill House was the now-iconic MA14 Hill House Chair, with its instantly recognizable extra-tall ladder back in lacquered wood. Other Mackintosh designs that are still in production include the monumental Willow Chair, the Berlino Table and the DS1 Folding Table.

One can only imagine where Mackintosh stood, laid or sat in order to draw inspiration for his work. Having a workspace that fuels inspiration and enhances productivity is essential; especially for home-based business owners and creative geniuses like Macintosh.

The difference between a comfortable armchair for short working hours and a quality desk chair for a traditional working style is fundamental to boost working habits and increase idea flow. Creating the right aesthetic for your workspace is not only important for your work, but important for your health – skimping on chairs may cost your body later. Sklar is proud to offer options that are classy and practical. With the right workspace furniture touches, you could be the next Mackintosh.

Ramón Esteve – a believer in everything beautiful and intelligent – graduated in Architecture from Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Madrid (ETSAM) in 1990. Trusting that architecture was an expanding global discipline, a year later he founded his own studio, Ramón Esteve Estudio de Arquitectura (RE_E) in Valencia, Spain.

The harmonious, fluid features in Esteve’ s work stem from his desire to create habitats, not just buildings, where people can enjoy an experience in the space. With work encompassing the fields of architecture, interiors, industrial design, and graphic communication, Esteve places substantial emphasis on the process of design; ensuring every project is conceived and executed with art and technique; as well as emotion that gives the project spirit, making you feel good.

Although he’s known for not following an established pattern or any kind of a recognizable style, believing every design is a unique work, he enjoys creating and designing with plastic – calling it a “magical material” as it’s possibilities are only limited by one’s imagination.

Beyond his ability to skilfully combine design principles and philosophies in order to create functional, creative projects, Esteve’s believes his strongest asset is his ability to make architecture and design that connects emotionally with the user; developing designs that evoke empathy and passion simultaneously.

Using design to communicate a way of living, RE_E is currently working on several architectural projects, as well as design commissions for brands such as Vondom, Vibia, and Porcelanosa.

Eero Saarinen, neofuturist architect and furniture designer, was born in Kirkkonummi, Finland in 1910. His future career path would be heavily influenced by those of his prominent parents, architect Eliel and textile artist Loja. After the family immigrated to the US, he was educated at Michigan’s Cranbrook Academy of Art, where he met Charles and Ray Eames and a girl called Florence Schust. The Saarinens were so taken with Florence that they began bringing her with them when travelling, and Eliel personally tutored her. These early relationships would prove lucky for all of them.

As an adult Eero studied sculpture and architecture before going into business with his father. In 1940 he and Charles Eames collaborated on the now-iconic Tulip Chair. Their old friend Florence, now Florence Knoll, held an important position at a leading US design house, and soon had the Tulip Chair in mass production. In the same decade Eero began winning important commissions as an architect, including the Gateway Arch at St Louis’ Jefferson National Expansion Memorial. He would go on to design several college buildings and campuses and two airports; he also helped finalize the design for the Sydney Opera House. But it’s as an industrial designer that many fans remember him best.

After the success of the Tulip Chair, Saarinen went on to create hit designs like the Womb Chair and Ottoman (1947-48) and the Pedestal collection of tables, chairs and stools (1954-57). He revised his designs obsessively and created multiple scale models and mockups of every piece until he was satisfied. The resultant furnishings remain fresh and exciting decades later, proving that they were truly ahead of their time.

Designer Spotlight: Charles and Ray Eames

Upon their marriage in 1941, Charles and Ray (Bernice) Eames formed a creative partnership that was to have a vast influence on architecture, industrial design, filmmaking and, perhaps most famously, furniture design. This extremely prolific duo produced over 100 furniture designs in four decades and left 750,000 photographs and slides to the Library of Congress at the time of Ray’s death in 1988 — ten years to the day after Charles’.

The Eameses believed that design should be similar to a guest-host relationship, with the designer as host anticipating the universal needs of every guest, or user. Their approach was playful and adventurous, and their pioneering use of materials like fiberglass, plastic resin, wire mesh and molded plywood resulted in some truly iconic designs, including the the 670 Lounge Chair and 671 Ottoman (both 1956).

The instantly recognizable 670 Lounge Chair is both of its time and enduringly popular. The shape of the 670 was inspired by a catcher’s mitt, and its impeccable appearance is matched by its famous level of comfort — Playboy magazine once claimed that it “sank the sitter into a voluptuous luxury that few mortals since Nero have known.” Paired as intended with the 671 Ottoman, it creates an iconic mid-century modern look.

The Eameses outsized influence continues to be felt throughout 21st century furniture and industrial design, and dozens of Eames pieces remain in production via Herman Miller, Inc. We are proud to stock authentic Eames furnishings, which are still manufactured in accordance with the exacting production process first outlined by the Eameses.

Matrix International was founded over 30 years ago in the Tuscan city of Poggibonsi, Italy. Although its surroundings are ancient, the company is devoted to developing and hand-constructing modern and contemporary furnishings.

Matrix offers two distinct collections, embracing the past and present of design. Codici is a range of classic designs that spans from the 1920s to the 1950s, while the contemporary Ultimate Collection currently includes pieces from the 1990s to the present day. In the words of a Matrix International spokesperson, the company “has two souls in one body”.

Codici features both instantly recognizable and previously unreleased designs by such design icons as Eero Saarinen, Marcel Breuer, Lilly Reich and Mies. Archival research by Matrix has uncovered a number of characteristic pieces that remained unproduced in the designers’ lifetimes, with results that are sure to fascinate followers of the mid-century modern and Bauhaus movements. See our selection of these design classics in our showroom, featuring iconic pieces like Eero Saarinen’s Tulip Armchair, Harry Bertoia’s Diamond Chair, and the Classic Chaise from Le Corbusier.

The Ultimate Collection emphasizes flexibility, and includes modular seating and extension tables alongside striking and complex non-motion designs. Contemporary designers including Paolo Portoghesi and Massimo Imparato have contributed bookcases, storage, seating and tables. While each collection is clearly unique, they reinforce each other and together tell a remarkably coherent story covering almost 100 years of design.

The prolific and talented designer, Giulio Manzoni, was born in 1952 and graduated with honors in architecture from Milan Polytechnic, which led fluidly into a career in design. This was proven when he won the Leonardo prize from the Museum of Science and Technology in Milan with his product Riletto. He also holds many patents for various products working mainly in Industrial Design.

One such product is the 4×4 Extendable Dining Table, a beautiful table of canaletto walnut by one of our new brands, Ozzio Italia. This table has recently been awarded the Red Dot Design Award 2016 in the Product Design Category with the following reasons:

“The new table 4X4 presents an exclusive opening system. The product changes its shape and outlook because of the extensions that, once opened, match the top and give an elegant leaf motif.”

The Red Dot Design Award is an international product design and communication design prize awarded by the Design Zentrum in Essen, Germany. There are prize categories for product design, design agencies, and design concepts. Since 1955, designers and producers can apply for the prizes with the winners being presented in an annual ceremony. Winning products are presented in the Red Dot Design Museum on the premises of the historical Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex in Essen.

The prize-winners list includes companies such as Siemens, Apple, BMW, the Bose Design Center, Porsche and Lenovo.

We are featuring this new table in our showroom in the fall of 2016, and anticipate the excitement that it will generate.
